What is an OCI card and how to apply for it? How to get an OCI card in India

OCI full form is the Overseas Citizenship of India. And this card is issued to those foreigners national who has some history in India and who are married to Indian national. It looks the same as an Indian Passport.

How to get an OCI card - 

You can apply for an OCI card after 6 months stay in India. You need to come to India with Entry OR spouse Visa. If your visa is Tourist, Missionary, and mountaineering you can not apply for OCI. You can change your visa type in India. 


You can also apply for an OCI card from Indian Embassy in your country.

1. Visit this website to apply online. This is the first step -

After you finish the online application, now take its print out and sign each and every document. Because you need to submit all the original documents to the Indian embassy or FRRO in India.FRRO OFFICE IN INDIA. APPLY OCI CARD IN INDIA


2. You need to upload these documents -

1. Passport copy of Indian national if you are married to Indian. And in his passport, there should be the name of a foreign national who is applying for an OCI card.

2. Marriage certificate at least 2-year-old.

3. Passport size photo - 4 photos of 3.5 cm x 3.5 cm size picture and 3 pieces stamp size photograph Light blue color background BUT not white. Height and width should be equal.

Size should be not less than 51*51mm with 80% of face visibility.

Jpeg format and less than 200KB in size.

4.Thumb impression if Minor

5. Application form. Need to print out after submitting online. 

6. If the marriage is solemnized in a foreign country then need attested or certified with the Indian embassy.

7. Marriage should be 2 years old.

8. Domicile Certificate / Nativity certificate for Indian Spouse 

9. Residence permit or Registration certificate from FRRO/FRO with at least 3 months validity

10. Now get all the documents original and go to the FRRO office to submit it.

11. 15000 INR needs to pay at the nearest FRRO office in India with original documents. You need to make a demand draft of 15000 in favor of “Pay and Accounts Officer (Secretariat), Ministry of Home Affairs” payable at New Delhi.

Processing time -

60 days

12.You will get a file number. You can also track your OCI process online by using this File number.

13.Now there will personal interviews of the applicant. It will be done by FRRO and it can be online.

14.While collecting the OCI card you need to present your Original passport.

Advantages of OCI card -

1. They can travel to India without getting a Visa.

2. They can stay in India for a long period of time.

3. They can do business and study in India.

4. After 1 year of getting an OCI card, you can also apply for Indian citizenship. But you should have OCI for a minimum of 5 years.

5. No need to go every time to the FRRO office to extend the visa. OCI is a Life long visa for India.

Disadvantages of OCI card -

1. The person with the OCI card is not an Indian citizen and he can not vote in India, he can not be a member of Lok / Rajya Sabha and Legislative assembly.

2. They can not buy the land in India in their name.
