How To Convert Tourist Visa To X Visa In India

An X or entry visa is given to those Forngnier who is married to Indian national or have an Indian origin. You can stay longer periods of time in India if you have an X visa.

Children of an Indian citizen can also get an X visa for India. If you are traveling to India with an X visa, you have to register your self in FRRO in India.



You need to register in FRRO (Foreign Regional Registration office) in India if you want to stay more than 180 days (6 months). Just do it before 180 days of living in India. FRRO offices are located in every district in India.  

You can also visit the nearest District Superintendents of Police to convert your visa. 


It's better if you visit the nearest FRRO office in your district within 1 week of arrival in India. So you have enough time to start the process of X visa and you also don’t have to pay a fine.

Procedure To Convert Tourist Visa Into X Visa -

1.Conversion of Tourist visa to X visa can be done online through the website of the Indian Bureau of Immigration. This is the link to the website -

2.If you don’t want to do it online, then just visit the nearest FRRO office. 

Documents needs if the visa will be for Indian foreigner wife -

- both original passport with photocopy

- Address proof in India

- Recent photo of the spouse

- marriage certificate

- Residential permit

After you submit all the documents in the FRRO office, Now the next step is police verification. The police will come to your address and take a sign of the couple. 

Now you need to go back FRRO office after some days of police verification. And get the passport of the spouse with an X visa on it. 

3.Indian foreigner can also get an X or Entry visa from her county. She just needs to visit the nearest Indian Embassy in her country.

How to get the resident permit in India - 

If foreign national wants to work and stay more then 180 days in India they need to get a residence permit. It will also give you by FRRO OR 

Superintendents of Police in a district. After you register in FRRO they will give you a Registration certificate. 

To get a residence permit you need to get a PAN card in India. Now get a copy of the PAN card and registration certificate to the FRRO office. Then you will get a Resident permit in India.
